Grills are one of the most energy inefficient appliances made today, and the advertising used to promote them proves this. Many appliances and grill manufacturers actually boast of burners that require a high BTU/hr input, which is like bragging about a car that gets bad gas mileage. Still, consumers have come to believe that the more BTU/hr a grill or other appliance consumes, the higher the temperature of the heat it produces. This is obviously not true.
BTU/hr is a measurement of the maximum amount of fuel a burner is capable of consuming. It is no indication of how hot a burner can operate. In other words, the energy efficiency of a grill is determined by how much fuel it consumes in the time that it takes to cook the food.
